Youth Exchange Program

As you know, the Rotary youth student exchanges were suspended during the pandemic. However, during this period, District 7610 leadership has continued to maintain its close relationship with our youth exchange partners, namely: the Eastern States Student Exchange (ESSEX) and the North American Youth Exchange Network (NAYEN). We are, now, ready to start the next student exchange process and are soliciting your help and involvement!

There are two types of exchanges. Long-Term Student Exchanges involve living abroad and completing a year of High School in a host country, while the Short-Term Student Exchanges can be several days to several months long and are conducted during summer school breaks.

This year, applications for exchanges must be completed by February 5, 2022 and students can expect to be notified of their country assignments by March 1, 2022. During the period-of-time– starting when the students are selected for the program and when they depart to their host country, District 7610 Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) leadership / staff will support students and families–to complete their applications and provide training and orientation.

Schedule for RYE Applicant Processing:

  • October 23, 2021: 2022-2023 Application Process Begins
  • December 18, 2021: Initial $150 Application Fee Due
  • December 18, 2021: Applicants District Interviews
  • February 5, 2022: Applications Finalized and Submitted
  • March 5, 2022: Notifications of Host Country Assignments
  • March 5, 2022: Final $350 Application Fee Due
  • March – August 2022: District Training and Orientation
  • Late August 2022: Exchange Students Depart for Host Countries

Prospective Outbound Youth Exchange Students should view the ESSEX website: and continue to visit this site as it is updated, periodically with current information. The North American Youth Exchange Network (NAYEN) is, yet, another source of information:

Additionally, should you have specific questions, please contact:
RYE Senior Advisor Phil Rusciolelli
and/or RYE Chair Roya Khan
They will communicate, direct, and coordinate all questions–with other key RYE position-holders.

Concurrently, we are looking for host families, in Northern Virginia. If you (or someone you know) has an interest in hosting an exchange student—simply contact Phil Rusciolelli and/or Roya Khan (above-mentioned e-mails, refer). District 7610 RYE leadership / staff will, also, be contacting previous host families, schools and clubs–that participated in student exchanges, that is, before the pandemic. We look forward to hearing from YOU! Thanks in advance.
