The Power of Zoom in Connecting Global Rotarians

At a recent club virtual meeting, Rotarian Madhu Bala Sharma, a visually impaired software specialist from India, delivered a compelling presentation on overcoming societal barriers and leveraging technology to empower individuals with disabilities. She discussed how disabilities in India are often associated with damaging beliefs, but she was fortunate to grow up in Delhi, where educational infrastructure provided better opportunities. Early in her life, Madhu Bala found inspiration in literature and English, leading her to a career in technology.
Currently, Madhu works at Amazon, where she helps develop inclusive solutions for people with low vision and blindness. She emphasized that technology is an essential tool, referring to it as “oxygen” that enables her to collaborate, lead, and thrive in a corporate environment. Tools like the screen reader on her Apple phone, the “Be My Eyes” app, and other assistive technologies enable her to navigate daily tasks and work life, demonstrating that barriers can be overcome with the right solutions. She also advocated for making the world more accessible, especially for the 20% of people with disabilities, the largest underrepresented group globally. In India, there are increasing efforts to provide accessible resources, such as online recorded books for children with visual impairments, which she did not have access to as a child.
Madhu’s message was clear: challenges and solutions are universal. She encouraged Rotary members to consider accessibility when creating content for meetings, newsletters, and events—such as incorporating closed captioning and using accessibility features in software like Microsoft. This effort will help ensure inclusivity and make Rotary resources available to everyone.
Madhu’s presentation also highlighted Zoom’s power in uniting Rotarians from around the world. The platform allows us to share stories and expertise regardless of geographical location and opens up opportunities for those with disabilities to engage and contribute. By embracing such tools, we are fostering a more inclusive Rotary, enhancing leadership, and building a sustainable future for all.
